It quickly became one of the most popular and well-reviewed Indian movies of the year. Pathaan captivated audiences around the world with its intense action scenes, gripping story, and star-studded cast. It broke box office records and gained a strong fan base
Plot Overview
Pathaan is set in the larger world of the YRF Spy Universe and tells the story of Pathaan, a former RAW spy played by Shah Rukh Khan. At the start of the movie, political tensions escalate as the Indian government removes Article 370, which granted Jammu and Kashmir special status. This prompts General Qadir, a cancer-stricken general in the Pakistani army, to engage in a series of violent actions. He works with the terrorist group “Outfit X” to plan a big attack on India. Jim (John Abraham), the evil guy in the story, used to work with Pathaan in RAW and now runs Outfit X. He wants to use a dangerous virus made in a lab to attack India.
As the story goes on, Pathaan, who is now living in exile and working in secret, joins forces with ex-ISI spy Rubina “Rubai” Mohsin (Deepika Padukone) to stop Jim. They work together in an uneasy way, rushing from Dubai to Moscow to Siberia and other places around the world to stop the terrible spread of the Raktbeej virus and the launch of missiles that could make the area less stable.
The movie ends with a high-stakes fight between Pathaan and Jim that takes place on an airplane carrying the deadly virus. Pathaan emerges victorious, averting a major catastrophe and regaining his position at RAW.
Cast & Performance
The entire cast of the movie is excellent. As the title character, Shah Rukh Khan gives an engaging performance that mixes action with emotional depth. Many people liked how he played Pathaan, an ex-agent who is trying to save his country while dealing with his past. John Abraham brings a lot of energy and menace to the role of Jim, the antagonist. This makes him a tough opponent for Khan’s Pathaan.
Ruby, a skilled and complex ISI agent, navigates a delicate balance between duty and morality. Deepika Padukone excels in her portrayal of Ruby. The relationship she has with Shah Rukh Khan makes the movie more interesting. The movie gets even better with cameos by Salman Khan as Avinash Singh Rathore from the Tiger movies and Dimple Kapadia as Dr. Nandini Grewal, the head of Joint Operations and Covert Research (JOCR).
Music and cinematography
Vishal-Shekhar wrote hit songs like “Besharam Rang” and “Jhoome Jo Pathaan,” featuring a lot of energy, which adds to the grandeur of the movie. Together with the exceptional musical score composed by Sanchit and Ankit Balhara, these songs significantly contribute to the action-packed sections of the film. Movie music and beautiful photography from around the world make the story more exciting.
Controversies
Even though Pathaan was a hit, it had issues before release. Critics said that Deepika Padukone’s outfit in the song “Besharam Rang” promoted inappropriate material. Right-wing groups, like Bajrang Dal, were against the movie’s release and even burned materials used to promote it. Despite the Central Board of Film Certification’s request for changes, the film received a U/A rating and went on to become a huge hit. The problems with the movie didn’t seem to affect its success, and it got a lot of attention for the risks it took with its plot.
Box office and reception
Pathaan came out on January 25, 2023, which was also India’s Republic Day weekend. It broke many records at the Indian box office when it first came out, including the biggest opening day, weekend, and week for a Hindi film.
