Created for Amazon Prime Video, Mirzapur is an Indian action crime thriller series written by Karan Anshuman alongside Puneet Krishna and Vineet Krishna. Anshuman directed the first season of the series, along with Aditya Mohanty and Mihir Desai, the latter of whom directed the second season. Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar of Excel Entertainment handle production of the show. The story centres on Akhandanand “Kaleen,” a businessman and criminal leader who essentially rules the Mirzapur area in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh state in India.

Story Synopsis

Mirror Season 1 chronicles the brutal, gritty underworld of the fictional Uttar Pradesh, India town of Mirzapur. The story revolves on two brothers, Guddu and Bablu Pandit, who following a sequence of life-altering events find themselves caught in the criminal activity of the area.

The narrative opens with the brutal mobster Akhandanand “Kaleen,” the boss of Mirzapur’s illicit gun trade, and his son Munna, hot-headed and ready to show his value to his father. Originally by chance, ambitious and strong-willed guy Guddu and his more intellectual but subdued sibling Bablu became entangled with the local crime gang.

The brothers’ life spirals out of control as they negotiate this perilous environment, resulting in betrayals, power conflicts, and brutal confrontations. With themes of power, vengeance, and survival, the show examines the intricate relationships among the Tripathis, the Pandit brothers, and other characters. Shock turns and a fierce struggle for control in Mirzapur define the season’s events.

Cast

Pankaj Tripathi is Akhandanand Tripathi, sometimes known as “Kaleen Bhaiya,” or Akhanda: Along with his manufacturing of illicit firearms (katta), he manages a carpet company. Munna’s father, Satyanand’s older son Beena’s spouse, and manipulative and power-obsessed man
Ali Fazal as Governor “Guddu”. Pandit: Sweety’s husband, Ramakant and Vasudha’s eldest son, subsequently lover of Shabnam and Golu. After winning the contest, he hoped to be Mr. Purvanchal, but thereafter worked for Akhandanand’s illicit weapons company.
Divyendu Sharma as Phoolchand Tripathi, sometimes known as “Munna,” Akhandanand’s grandchild from Madhuri’s marriage. His obsession with being the “King of Mirzapur” drives him to fight often with his father.
Vinay “Bablu” has Vikrant Massey as Pandit: Originally intending to be an IAS Officer by completing UPSC exams, Ramakant and Vasudha’s youngest son was outstanding in academics but eventually worked for Akhandanand’s illicit firearms company. Munna subsequently shot him on Akhandanand’s instruction. Shriya Pilgaonkar as Swaragini “Sweety” Gupta Pandit: Munna’s love interest was Parshuram’s older daughter Golu’s sister and Guddu’s wife. She was robust and self-assured. Former King of Mirzapur, Kulbhushan Kharbanda (also known as “Bauji”) is Akhandanand’s father and Munna’s grandfather, so serving as the Tripathi family patriarch. Lilliput as Geeta’s husband and Devdatt Tyagi, sometimes known as “Dadda,” Bharat and Shatrughan’s father. He is a strong man of Siwan, Bihar and a dealer of alcohol as well as stolen motors.
Shweta Tripathi as Gajgamini “Golu”; Akhandanand’s second wife, Munna’s stepmother, Rasika Dugal Gupta: Sweety’s younger sister and Parshuram’s youngest daughter; she is a geeky, bright college bookworm. Once she sets out to exact retribution after Munna killed Bablu and Sweety, her character grows more vicious and unyielding.
Isha Talwar plays Munna’s wife, Surya’s daughter, Madhuri Yadav Tripathi. Once her father passes away, she takes over as Uttar Pradesh’s CM.
Double part Vijay Varma plays Shatrughan “Chote” Tyagi (Devdatt and Geeta’s younger son, and Golu’s love interest) and Bharat “Bade” Tyagi (Devdatt and Geeta’s eldest son, and Saloni’s husband).

Critics View

November 16, 2018 saw the release Mirzapur first season. While critics offered conflicting opinions, viewers responded favourably to the show. Particularly Pankaj Tripathi and Ali Fazal, the cast members’ performances were much praised. After Sacred Games, it finally became the most watched streaming show in India.

Verdict

Mirzapur Season 1’s direction is quite successful in generating an immersive, stressful, gritty experience. Karan Anshuman and Gurmeet Singh deftly strike action, drama, and character development to create a riveting investigation of crime, power, and morality. Strong cast performances and interesting story arcs help to greatly contribute to the success of the show by their capacity to create suspense and depict the brutal reality of Mirzapur’s underworld. The success of the season depends in great part on the direction.
